Church of Scientology Joins Other Catalonian Faiths in Supporting the Region’s Rich Cultural Heritage

The Church of Scientology joined the Catholic and Orthodox Churches and the Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh communities of Catalonia in endorsing a formal agreement to promote the use of the Catalan language in the religious and social activities of their congregations.

They agree to introduce the language to those not familiar with it, use it in their liturgy, introduce it to communities unfamiliar with the language and support and increase its use among those who speak it.

The President of the Generalitat (the Catalonian Government), Pere Aragonès, and the Minister of Justice, Lourdes Ciuró, met with representatives of the 17 main denominations in Catalonia along with the General Directorate of Religious Affairs to formalize the agreement, Religions per la Llengua (Religions for Language).

Ciuró asked the representatives of the religions to include Catalan in their liturgical practices, thus affirming its use as “a language of prayer.”

Mercedes Gomez, spokesperson for the Church of Scientology in Catalonia, expressed her Church’s commitment to support this project. The Creed of the Church of Scientology and the Scientology Prayer for Total Freedom have already been translated into Catalan and all other Scientology religious services, including its wedding ceremonies, memorial service, ministerial ordination, naming ceremony and sermons will follow soon.

In February this year, while hosting a religious diversity exhibition at the Scientology Church in Barcelona, Gomez led those attending in the Scientology Prayer for Total Freedom in Catalan—a prayer that was particularly poignant just a week after the invasion of Ukraine:

May the author of the universe enable all men to reach an understanding of their spiritual nature.

May awareness and understanding of life expand, so that all may come to know the author of the universe.

And may others also reach this understanding which brings Total Freedom.

At this time, we think of those whose liberty is threatened; of those who have suffered imprisonment for their beliefs; of those who are enslaved or martyred, and for all those who are brutalized, trapped or attacked.

We pray that human rights will be preserved so that all people may believe and worship freely, so that freedom will once again be seen in our land.

Freedom from war, and poverty, and want; freedom to be; freedom to do and freedom to have.

Freedom to use and understand Man’s potential—a potential that is God-given and Godlike.

And freedom to achieve that understanding and awareness that is Total Freedom.

May God let it be so.

_______________

From its beginnings, the Church of Scientology has recognized that freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. In a world where conflicts are often traceable to intolerance of others’ religious beliefs and practices, the Church has, for more than 50 years, made the preservation of religious liberty an overriding concern.

The Church publishes this blog to help create a better understanding of the freedom of religion and belief and provide news on religious freedom and issues affecting this freedom around the world.

The Founder of the Scientology religion is L. Ron Hubbard and Mr. David Miscavige is the religion’s ecclesiastical leader.
